Hi! I’m a senior research fellow in philosophy at ACU in Melbourne, Australia. Before coming to ACU, I was a lecturer in political theory at the University of Manchester from August 2013 to April 2018.  I got my PhD from ANU in 2013. For May and June 2019, I’ll be a visiting professor at the University of Vienna, working on the ERC-funded project The Normative and Moral Foundations of Group Agency. I’m an associate editor at Analysis and a member of the editorial panel at Thought. I’m on the steering committee of the International Social Ontology Society.

I’m primarily interested in the philosophy of groups, that is, in how we should conceptualise their ontological status,  mental and epistemic capacities, agency, responsibility, and duties. I’m also keenly interested in applying these conceptualisations to states and businesses. I’ve got side interests in moral demandingness, feminist ethics, human rights, and the nature of individuals’ obligations in the face of global catastrophes and moral collective action problems. If you’re researching similar topics, I’d be delighted if you contacted me.

For six months in 2017-18, I was a Mind Association Research Fellow, thinking about group duties. I’m finishing up a book on the topic.

On this website you can download everything I’ve published, read more about my current research, and find out about my upcoming speaking events.

Below is what my ‘incredulous stare’ looks like.  The stare was directed at the camera of Ole Koksvik in November 2017. The photo at the top was taken by me at Kohimarama Beach, near where I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand.
